Headache — When a Dublin GP Can Help, and When to Go Now
Screens in the IFSC, skipped lunches, Guinness the night before, and genuine migraine all get called “a headache”. One of those is a lifestyle remark. One can end a week. One is a 999 call. This Dublin page is written so you do not book a video for a thunderclap headache, and so you do have a path for recurrent pain that is wrecking work in the city.
For life-threatening emergencies in Ireland, call 999 or 112. Do not wait for an online appointment.
Complete the secure booking form below — same appointment flow as our main booking page. Fee is shown before you pay.
Sort the emergency first
Worst headache of your life, peak in seconds, head injury, neck stiffness with fever, rash, weakness, facial droop, speech trouble, new seizure, or a headache with sudden vision loss — emergency department or ambulance. Do not wait on DrOnline247.ie.
New headache in pregnancy, after childbirth, or if you are on blood thinners also raises the stakes. Say these immediately if you still use a routine booking — better, go in.
We repeat this because headache content that ranks without red flags is how people get hurt.
Migraine, tension-type, and sinus stories
Migraine often comes with light or noise sensitivity, nausea, and a need to lie down in a dark room in a Dublin flat with the blinds down. Tension-type is more band-like, often tied to desks and jaw clenching on the N11 commute. “Sinus” is over-called; not every facial pain is an infection needing antibiotics.
If you already have a diagnosis and need a conversation about a worsening pattern, remote care can be reasonable. First presentations that sound atypical still may need in-person exams.
Medication-overuse headache from too many pharmacy painkillers is common and awkward to hear. It is also treatable if you tell the truth about weekly tablet counts.
What a remote GP can do
Take a careful history, review what you already take, discuss acute treatment options that are appropriate, flag overuse, and advise when imaging is not a shopping list item.
They cannot look at the back of your eye properly on most phone cameras. If fundoscopy or a neurological exam is required, you will be redirected.
Triptans and other migraine medicines are not automatic. Heart disease, pregnancy, and other contraindications matter.
Dublin work and the “I cannot miss the meeting” problem
People try to present through a migraine on a Teams call from a kitchen in Phibsborough and then want a cert after they collapse at 4pm. Book earlier if you can. The GP still assesses, not your calendar.
Cluster headache is a different beast — severe, often around one eye, restless. It needs a proper medical pathway, not a blog remedy.
Caffeine withdrawal from a delayed coffee on the LUAS is real and still not an emergency. Mention it; do not use it to hide a thunderclap story.
Children and older adults
Kids with headache plus vomiting and drowsiness need urgent paediatric assessment. Do not bargain with a video slot.
New headache after fifty, or headache with cancer history, is a higher bar for remote reassurance.
Always have a parent on the call for minors.
Internal links and intent
General pain consultation Ireland is the national service. Flu Dublin covers headache with fever and aches. Anxiety Dublin covers tension that is mostly worry. Use the page that matches the story.
Sick cert Dublin if work documentation is the add-on, not the diagnosis.
This URL exists for “headache doctor Dublin” queries without copying the national pain page word for word.
Trust, fees and safety-netting for Dublin patients
DrOnline247.ie is a private remote GP service. Dublin searchers should treat every page on this city cluster as local intent sitting on top of the same Irish Medical Council registered doctors who see patients nationwide. We do not operate a walk-in in the city centre, and we do not replace the Mater, St Vincent’s, Tallaght or your own practice when those doors are the safe ones.
Fees are shown before you pay. We do not publish invented euro prices in articles because prices can change and because stuffing numbers into medical copy is how pages look like ads. Certificates, e-prescriptions and letters follow assessment. Controlled medicines are not prescribed on this service.
If you are in immediate danger, call 999 or 112. For mental health crisis support in Ireland use Samaritans 116 123 or Pieta 1800 247 247. Those numbers beat any booking form on a Dublin phone.
Keep your usual Dublin practice in the loop for smears, vaccines, chronic disease and anything that needs a file over years. A remote consult is a way through a closed list, not a second identity. If a GP on this service sends you toward in-person care, take that as the clinical product — not as a website failing to “complete” a sale.
Internal links on every Dublin URL exist so you can move from this cluster to Online Doctor Ireland, Online GP Ireland, Book by concern, pricing, policies and clinical governance without opening a new Google tab. That is how we keep city pages useful and keep national pages from being cannibalised.
