GP support is a starting point
An Irish GP can listen, assess risk, discuss sleep and stress, review medicines where relevant, and signpost counselling, community or specialist mental-health supports.
Online GP care is not crisis psychotherapy and not a replacement for emergency mental-health services. If you feel unsafe or are thinking of harming yourself, seek urgent help now.
Crisis and urgent help in Ireland
Call 999 or 112 in an emergency. You can also use local HSE mental-health and crisis pathways. Your online GP may advise immediate in-person attendance when risk is high.
Often suitable for online review
- Initial discussion of stress, anxiety or low mood with a GP
- Medication reviews when clinically appropriate and history is clear
- Guidance on further supports and referrals
Not for online booking
- Active suicidal crisis or immediate danger — call 999/112 or go to ED
- Complex therapy needs that require specialist mental-health services
Common questions
- Can an online doctor prescribe antidepressants?
- Only after careful assessment and when clinically appropriate. Many people need face-to-face review, blood tests or specialist input. It is never automatic from a booking.
