A GP surgery has always been tied to a postcode, in effect: you register near where you live, and your access to a same-day slot depends on how busy that particular practice happens to be. DrOnline247.ie doesn’t work that way. The GP who sees a patient in Dublin 8 on a Tuesday morning can see someone outside Clifden that same afternoon, because the consultation travels down a video or phone line rather than down a road. If you’ve got a reasonably steady internet connection or a working phone, you’ve got the same access to care as anyone in the country, regardless of which county is on your driving licence.
For life-threatening emergencies in Ireland, call 999 or 112. Do not wait for an online appointment.

Why your eircode doesn’t decide how good your GP is
There’s a particular kind of frustration that comes from ringing round four GP practices only to be told none of them are taking new patients, or that the earliest slot is a fortnight away. That frustration tends to track population density: it’s worse the further you are from a large town, and worst of all in parts of the country where one practice covers a genuinely wide area. Telemedicine sidesteps that problem almost entirely, because the thing being delivered — a GP’s attention over video or phone — doesn’t get thinner the further the patient lives from a city.
We built DrOnline247.ie on exactly that basis. A booking from an apartment in Dublin 2 and a booking from a farmhouse outside Mohill in County Leitrim go through the identical process, land with the same pool of IMC-registered GPs, and get the identical standard of consultation. What differs is the view out the window, not the quality of the care.
To be straight about what this does and doesn’t mean: we don’t run physical clinics dotted around the country. DrOnline247.ie is a remote service — video and phone, full stop. What’s available nationwide is access to a consultation, not a branch in every town. If something needs a hands-on look, bloods or a scan, your GP will point you towards appropriate in-person care near you rather than pretend otherwise.
The map, county by county
In Leinster, patients book in from Dublin, Kildare, Wicklow, Meath, Louth, Laois, Offaly, Longford, Westmeath, Carlow, Kilkenny and Wexford, with no difference in the booking flow between a city-centre address and a townland outside Mullingar. Munster is covered just as fully, across Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Clare, Tipperary and Waterford, from the Beara Peninsula to the edge of the Golden Vale.
Connacht’s counties — Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim and Roscommon — have exactly the same access, as do the Republic’s three Ulster counties, Donegal, Cavan and Monaghan. Put simply: if your address is anywhere in the Republic of Ireland, you can book a consultation with us.
We spell out counties and provinces here for clarity, not because the care itself changes from one to another. A consultation booked from a mobile home outside Letterkenny follows the same clinical process, the same documentation and the same standards as one booked from a desk in the IFSC.
Five cities, one nationwide service
Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick and Waterford each get a dedicated page, mostly because a good number of people searching for an online doctor type their city’s name into the search bar first. Those pages describe the exact same consultations available everywhere else, just framed with a bit of local context.
If you’re outside those five — a town in the midlands, a village on the Wild Atlantic Way, a housing estate on the edge of a county town — the main booking flow works identically. You simply won’t have a page with your town’s name in the title, which makes no difference at all to how quickly you’re seen or by whom.
What ‘available everywhere’ actually means
Nationwide availability means every county has equal access to a video or phone consultation. It does not mean we operate waiting rooms in every county — we don’t operate waiting rooms at all. It also doesn’t mean every concern, regardless of where you live, is suited to remote care; some things need a physical examination no matter which county you’re booking from, and a good GP will say so rather than push ahead because a screen is all that’s on offer that day.
This is also why we’re upfront, repeatedly, that DrOnline247.ie complements local GP practices and hospital services rather than replacing them. Nationwide coverage is about nationwide access to remote consultations, backed by honest guidance on the fairly frequent occasions when remote care isn’t the full answer on its own.
Rural broadband, bad signal and the phone option
For patients further from a town centre, the practical upside of this service is often biggest: no hour-long round trip to the nearest surgery, no juggling who’s covering the yard or the school run, no sitting in a waiting room while feeling rough. You’re seen from your own kitchen table, full stop.
We’re also realistic about the fact that broadband and mobile coverage still vary a good deal across rural Ireland. Where a stable video connection isn’t reliable, a phone consultation gives you the same clinical standard without needing much of a data connection at all, and you can choose whichever format suits you on the day you book, not in advance.
The hand-off, when one is needed
Being reachable everywhere doesn’t mean everything should be handled remotely, and part of doing this properly is spotting quickly when it shouldn’t be. If your GP decides during a call that you need to be examined in person, tested, or seen urgently, they’ll say so clearly and help you work out the sensible next step — your own practice, an out-of-hours service, or an emergency department, depending on how urgent it is.
And regardless of which county you’re calling in from, the same emergency guidance applies everywhere on this site. Chest pain, serious breathing difficulty, heavy bleeding, loss of consciousness, signs of a stroke — none of that waits for an online slot. Call 999 or 112, or get to your nearest emergency department straight away. Nationwide access is about making routine, non-emergency GP care easier to reach everywhere; it was never meant to add a delay to the situations where minutes matter.
Booking from a boreen looks exactly like booking from Grafton Street
Pull up the booking page from a flat near Grafton Street or from a cottage down a laneway outside Clonakilty, and you’ll go through the same handful of steps either way: pick the service or concern that matches how you feel, choose a time slot, answer a short set of pre-consultation questions, and confirm. Nothing about that sequence changes based on your eircode, your accent, or how far you are from the nearest town — the GP who takes your call has the same information and the same tools in front of them no matter where in the country you’re sitting.
That consistency matters more in rural Ireland than it might sound. Plenty of patients outside the main cities have grown used to ringing round a few practices, being told a GP isn’t taking new patients, or waiting noticeably longer than someone closer to a larger town. DrOnline247.ie doesn’t work on that basis, because capacity is shared nationally across our whole pool of GPs — where you land in the queue depends on overall demand at the time you book, not on how many doctors happen to practise near your own front door.
We also keep the technical side deliberately simple, because asking rural patients to have fancy kit or a particular broadband package would undo the whole point of a nationwide service. A phone, tablet or laptop with a reasonably steady connection does the job, and if a video call drops partway through, our GPs are well used to switching straight over to a phone consultation rather than losing the appointment altogether.
Wherever you’re booking from, a GP is on the line
City centre or townland, the same IMC-registered GPs answer the call by video or phone.
No — DrOnline247.ie is a remote, video- and phone-based service rather than a chain of clinics. Our GPs consult with patients right across all 26 counties of the Republic of Ireland entirely online.
Does the care differ depending on which county I’m in?
No. The clinical process and standards are identical everywhere, whether you’re booking from a city centre or a rural townland. The only real difference is whether your city has its own dedicated page.
I don’t live near Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick or Waterford — can I still book?
Yes, absolutely. Those five cities have dedicated pages because of search demand, but the service covers every county in the Republic. Book directly from our main appointment page regardless of where you live.
My broadband at home is patchy — what then?
Choose a phone consultation instead of video when you book. It carries the same clinical standard and doesn’t need a strong connection.
Can prescriptions and certs be issued no matter where I live?
Where it’s clinically appropriate, yes. Prescriptions go electronically to a chemist of your choosing anywhere in Ireland, and certificates can be issued the same day following assessment, wherever you’re based.
